encore presentations on Friday, December 27 & Saturday, December 28 at 9 pm ET/PT

BOSTON – December 2, 2013Contrarian, a new documentary from award-winning filmmaker Mary Mazzio, and narrated by former Senator, Fred Dalton Thompson, chronicles the life of philanthropist and legendary investor, John Templeton, who ranks among the top 5 mutual fund managers of all time, alongside Warren Buffett, T. Rowe Price and Peter Lynch.

Raised in a small rural town in Tennessee, Templeton displayed entrepreneurial spirit at an early age by selling firecrackers to classmates. He also learned valuable lessons about calculated risk- taking as a college freshman at Yale. The Depression was in full swing when his father made an unfortunate bet on cotton futures, losing everything.  Undeterred by this setback, young Templeton stayed on at Yale, paying his own way with the earnings from three jobs and nightly poker games.

His entrepreneurial nature as well as his travels to foreign lands (as a Rhodes Scholar) gave Templeton the confidence to explore opportunities in previously untapped markets.  He pioneered the concept of investing in emerging markets such as Thailand, Singapore, Japan and Korea, long before others.

The film follows Templeton’s resilience and his meteoric rise as an entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist who attributed his success to the lessons learned in his youth: think differently, live frugally, and be willing to bet against conventional thinking. Templeton’s motto was “how little we know, how eager to learn.”

CONTRARIAN will premiere on Thursday, December 26, at 9 pm ET/PT on Bloomberg Television with encore presentations on Friday, December 27 & Saturday, December 28 at 9 pm ET/PT.  The film will then be available on for a limited time.

Contrarian was independently produced by Mary Mazzio for the John Templeton Foundation to commemorate Templeton’s 100th birthday. Mazzio’s previous films include TEN9EIGHT, which tells the stories of inner-city teen entrepreneurs; A Hero for Daisy, which chronicles the 1976 protest by Yale women athletes that changed American college sports forever; and The Apple Pushers, a film which follows immigrant street cart vendors pushing fresh produce into food deserts.
