It has been nearly three years this month that an Argentine naval vessel was seized by a major activist hedge fund, with then Argentine President Cristina Fernandez ordering an evacuation of the vessel that Elliott Management’s NML Capital had seized in exchange for payment on defaulted bonds. Paul Singer’s Elliott Management would also target Argentina’s presidential plane, leading Fernandez to fly around the world in a rented aircraft so as not to be subject to Elliott’s seizure attempts.
