Global M&A passes $1 trillion for second consecutive quarter with AstraZeneca’s $39 billion bid for Alexion

Deals recorded since July total US $2.1 trillion, marking the second highest second half M&A total since our records began in the 1970s.

As AstraZeneca announces a US$38.8 billion offer for Alexion Pharmaceuticals, fourth quarter M&A reaches US$1.0 trillion, marking the second consecutive trillion dollar quarter. Deals recorded since July total US$2.1 trillion, marking the second highest second half M&A total since our records began in the 1970s.

AstraZeneca’s US$38.8 billion bid for Alexion Pharmaceuticals is the 7th largest deal to be announced so far this year. 111 mega deals, worth US$5 billion or more, have been announced so far during 2020, up from 97 during 2019 and the fourth highest annual total since our records began.

UK acquisitions in the US total US$61.5 billion so far during 2020, 180% more than last year and the highest annual level since 2016.
