Exclusive: Maverick Launches New Growth Fund To Capitalise On Mid-Market Private CompaniesRupert Hargreaves
Following the success of its investment in South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang, Maverick Ventures, the venture capital arm of Maverick Capital, the long/short equity hedge fund founded by Tiger Cub Lee Ainslie, is now looking for new deals.
Maverick Ventures was founded in 2015 when Maverick's growing private company portfolio started to limit its options. The success with private investments precluded its hedge funds from making any meaningful illiquid investments. So, the firm set up a dedicated vehicle to provide more flexibility.
Until the company's IPO earlier this year, Coupang was the firm's most significant private investment by far. It owned more than 6% of Coupang, worth more than $5 billion at its IPO. The IPO of Coupang has allowed Maverick to start reconsidering new private investments.
The investment manager recently added $600 million to a third evergreen venture fund. The previous venture fund was backed by $382 million two years ago.
