On the 2014 Forbes rich list, Warren Buffett ranks fourth with a net worth of $61.6 billion. While most people on the list tend to be business tycoons or heirs, Buffett is unique in that he has made his fortune entirely from the capital market.

His success has spawned a veritable cottage industry in writings on his investment techniques. Not all these books are of a uniformly high standard. Only those written by experienced money managers tend to shed light on his techniques in a manner that readers can profit from.

Timothy Vick’s book makes the grade. The first couple of chapters are biographical. What one also learns is that besides being an astute stock picker, Buffett also owes his success to his investments in insurance companies. The latter collect premiums from customers of which only a portion has to be paid back as compensation in the future.

The balance, called free float, is invested by Buffett in stocks and compounds rapidly. In the chapter called ‘Buffett Math 101’, the author dwells on the power of compounding. If you hold on to your investments for a long time, you save on trading costs.

Praise for How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett

“This is a must read for anyone wanting to learn the investing techniques of Warren Buffett.”Mary Buffett, Author, Buffettology

“I have seen no trend toward value investing in the 35 years I’ve practiced it. There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.”
–Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett is widely considered history¿s greatest investor. This fascinating man humorous and homespun on the outside, serious and ready for battle on the insidewould have the world believe his success was as simple as adding 2 + 2. But the truth is entirely different. As How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett reveals, Buffett has a clear and consistent set of investment rules and methods that have brought him and his investors unparalleled good fortune. These tools including which performance numbers Buffett considers most critical, strategies he employs to take advantage of consistently irrational markets, management attitudes that make him look favorably on a situation, and more are, for the first time, analyzed with the attention to detail investors require.

The resulting book is nothing less than a step-by-step rulebook for emulating Buffett’s startling investment successes.

“What doesn’t work is when you start doing things you don’t understand or because they worked last week for somebody else. The dumbest reason in the world to buy a stock is because it’s going up.”

Far from a scratch-the-surface biography filled with interesting but extraneous biographic material, How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett takes you straight to the core of Buffett’s investing genius. Timothy Vick tells you how Buffett did it, how he continues to do it, and how you can follow Buffett’s lead to build an impressive portfolio of your own.
